GENERAL ALBERT SIDNEY JOHNSTON

Albert Sidney
Johnston

Born in Kentucky in 1807, Johnston moved to
Texas in 1836 and joined the Texas Army as a
private eventually earning the title of Secretary
of War for the Republic of Texas.

During the Civil War, he commanded the Army
of Mississippi and was mortally wounded at the
Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862, and buried in
New Orleans. (Metairie Cemetery)

His remains were laid to rest in the (this) Cemetery
in 1867. The sculpture and structure were
completed by Elisabet Ney in 1904.
