Henry Gray, Jr.
was born in South Carolina. His
father served as a captain in the U.S. Army in the War of 1812 and his
grandfather Fredrick Gray was a captain in the Revolutionary War. He attended South Carolina College and became an attorney. He resided in Winston County, Mississippi and was the District Attorney. He moved to Louisiana, became a member of the Louisiana legislature and ran for the U.S. Senate losing by one vote in the legislature. When Mississippi seceded from the Union, he enlisted as a private in a Mississippi regiment. Jefferson Davis, a good friend, soon called him to raise a regiment which became the 28th Louisiana Infantry. Gray was elected Colonel. Following battles at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill during the Red River Campaign, he was promoted to Brigadier General. After the Civil War, he served a term in the Louisiana State Senate and then retired from public life. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
