Fever Cemetery Chataigner Reported by Terry Landreneau 8/21/12 | ||
The owner of the
property also told me that directly across the road from Johnson Cemetery,
in the overgrown woods and briars is another cemetery. It was called Le
Cimitiere des fievres, or in English, the Fever Cemetery. People who had contagious diseases or died form some unknown causes and
nothing about this was really known because medicine was in its early
stages, people feared putting them in the regular cemeteries, for fear that
the disease could someway spread to the people visiting the regular
cemeteries, hence the name Fever cemetery. I have not seen this one because it is on private property, but the one
who told me about it said when she was a little girl she used to go there to
play in the houses which were built over the graves, they were like
playhouses for small children.
