WHITE'S CHAPEL and CEMETERY
October 7, 2010
White's Chapel and Cemetery is located nine miles south of Bunkie,
Louisiana, two miles beyond Gold Dust on Highway 29. Land for the
church and cemetery was given to the church in 1894 by William Avery
O'Quin, Sr. It was built by Lee Ezell Evans and his brother, Hugh, who
came to Louisiana from Owensboro, Kentucky. The church was named in
honor of Rev. Frederick White, an early minister in the Chicot District,
which included much of Avoyelles and St. Landry Parishes.
Gladys Sandefur and Inez Sandefur LaHaye first took a census of White's
Chapel Cemetery in 1978. More names were added by Edna Mae Morrison
Havard, Marshall Stagg, Tommy Thayer and Irma Catherine Carter Goulas.
There was no trace of some graves as for many years no fence enclosed the
cemetery. The grounds were overgrown with high grass and weeds, and
cattle grazed freely. Some markers were broken and lost. Unmarked graves
faded from distinction. The following names are those from obituaries
obtained from the Bunkie Record and Ville Platte Gazette of those buried in
White's Chapel Cemetery where no markers have been found. (This
information was researched and provided by Edna Mae Morrison Havard.)

Isidore and Aloysia FAUL BODIN were farmers from Church Point,
Louisiana. They moved to Gold Dust as share croppers. During the flu
epidemic of 1918, five of the BODIN children died within a two week
period. The BODIN family lived a long way from a Catholic Church, in a
Protestant area of Louisiana. The children were laid to rest in the White's
Chapel Cemetery in a plot donated by the O'QUIN family, who on 1894
donated the land for the church and cemetery.
A granite marker with BODIN FAMILY 1918 was placed beside the
original marble cross in2002.
